The Ultimate Skin Care Routine For Your Skin Type

Wondering what the skincare routine for normal skin should be? Oily, sensitive, combination, dry? You're in the right place...

Have you ever wondered why your skincare products aren’t delivering on their promises? Or why your complexion is looking a little dull and lackluster no matter how many brightening products you use? Well, there’s a reason for this that many people don’t consider.

You see, each person has a different skin type, which generally fall into 5 categories; normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. Each skin type requires different products and its own care and attention, and yet most people don’t take their unique skin type into account when going through their routine.

Tailoring your routine to your precise skin type could be the unlock to gorgeous, glowing skin – and we’re here to help you do that! Below, we’ve put together the perfect 4 step routine for every skin type which you can go through in the morning and evening.

Skin Care Routine For Normal Skin

You may be wondering if you have "normal" skin. It tends to mean that you're less prone to breakouts and skin irritations, but it doesn't mean you never have skin troubles! You might still have oily or dry skin occasionally, but you're lucky enough that it's not a daily occurrence! So, what's the best skincare routine for normal skin? You have the opportunity to try different brands and ingredients, but follow this simple routine:

  1. Cleanse: First, cleanse the face with warm water to open your pores. Find a gentle, natural cleanser to nourish your skin. If you wear makeup, you may want to try a micellar water cleanser. Cleansing the skin washes your off the daily oils, dirt and toxins it picks up! Make sure you rinse with warm water after.
  2. Tone: Next, use a toner – it will remove any residue left after cleansing, and helps keep the skin hydrated. Some toners can be quite harsh on the skin, so make sure you look for one with moisturizing ingredients.
  3. Moisturize: After toning, dry your face, and apply a high-quality moisturizer. It will soften and protect your skin, keeping it hydrated throughout the day.
  4. SPF: If it's the morning, use a sunblock or moisturizer with SPF to finish your routine - even on a cloudy day! UV rays can penetrate clouds, windows, and dull skies.

Skin Care Routine For Dry Skin

Dry skin is known medically as xerosis cutis, and it’s a year-round problem for many people. Our skin soaks up the moisture applied to it, but still flakes hours after. If you have dry skin, you need a routine that will lock moisture in, and encourage the production of your skin’s natural oils.

  1. First Cleanse: You’ll want to find a gentle cleanser that doesn’t contain any alcohol or fragrance because they can dry out the skin more! Look for ingredients such as fruit extracts, coconut oil or natural humectants.
  2. Second Cleanse: After the initial cleanse rids your skin of dirt and makeup, wash the face again using an oil cleanser or micellar water. Rinse it off with warm water. Don’t use hot water, as the heat will remove the natural oils that your glands produce, which will dry it out further.
  3. Tone: Use a gentle toner, to hydrate the skin more. Dry skin can be more prone to skin damage and infection (if the skin is broken) so toner will make sure the skin is clear of any leftover bacteria.
  4. Moisturize With SPF: If you suffer from dry skin, moisturizing is the most important step. You want to look for a rich, intense moisturizer that specializes in locking hydration into the skin's deeper layers and protects you from the sun's UV rays all year long.

Cel Pro Tip: For a deeper clean and to get rid of dry flakes, you should exfoliate your skin, but limit it to no more than once a week! Exfoliating can damage the skin if done too much and strip the skin of natural oils.

Skin Care Routine For Oily Skin

Having oily skin doesn’t mean you should avoid moisturizers; you just need to find the right one! Oily skin can be made worse by factors such as stress and diet but is very often a genetic issue. Those with oily skin need to find products that manage the skin's natural production of sebum. Try drinking more water, and cut down on sugars and animal products to reduce the oiliness of your skin, and use this routine as a guide to care for your skin:

  1. Cleanse: Start by using warm water and a good cleansing foam  or gel to clean your face. Warm water opens up the pores, allowing the cleanser to wash away bacteria embedded in the face. Gel cleansers are best for oil-prone complexions, as they help to control sebum without drying the skin.
  2. Rinse: Wash the cleanser off using cold water. Cold water closes the pores, stopping any toxins from getting in there. Keeping pores open can lead to pimples and blackheads, which oily skin suffers from already.
  3. Tone: Look for alcohol-free toners with ingredients such as geranium (an essential oil good at reducing sebum production), and witch hazel (that reduces oil without drying the skin too much).
  4. Moisturize: Yes, even for those with oily skin, moisturizing is important for skin health and hydration. Remember, you just need to find the right one. We recommend using a light, oil-free moisturizer that includes glycerin in the ingredients list. Don't forget to use one with SPF in the morning!

Cel Pro Tip: Use a retinol serum in the evening, to reduce the size of your pores. For the best results, you should use it continually.

Skin Care Routine For Combination Skin

Having combination skin means you have areas of oily skin, usually the nose, chin, and forehead, while other areas on the face might be drier. For those of us with this problem, we need to find a skin care routine that balances out the different areas on the face - like the way a sweet jelly balances out a dry and salty peanut butter!

  1. Cleanse: Splash your face with warm water to the open the pores. If you find that the oily areas on your face are prone to breakouts, choose a cleansing gel or micellar water. If a gel begins to dry the skin too much, you can try cleansing lotions. Apply to the face and rinse with cold water to close the pores.
  2. Tone: Apply an alcohol-free toner, it will lock in moisture and remove excess oil, while stripping away any bacterial residue left on the skin.
  3. Moisturize: Your skin will react best to a lightweight, gentle moisturizer that won’t add to the oiliness of the skin, but will soften the dryer parts. Remember to use something with SPF for the mornings.
  4. Zinc Oxide Sunscreen: Sunscreen is always difficult to find for those with oilier skin types, but a zinc oxide SPF will leave more of a matte finish, rather than add excess moisture.

Cel Pro Tip: A clay mask once a week is a great addition for those with combination skin. Focus on the t-zone area where excess oil seems to occur for best results.

Skin Care Routine For Sensitive Skin

You might find that the skin on your face reacts to certain products because it is more sensitive. If this is the case for you, it is very important to find skincare products that are gentle, natural and focused on nourishing the skin. These won't lead to skin irritations, such as itchiness or redness.

  1. Cleanse: Cleanse your face using a sulfate-free cleansing lotion, and tepid water. If the water is hot it can cause inflammation, which will irritate your skin and compromise your natural barrier.
  2. Tone: Apply an alcohol-free toner, and try to find one that has anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as chamomile or green tea extract. This will help soothe the skin and prepare it for the day.
  3. Moisturize: For sensitive skin, it’s always best to use unscented products, so find a moisturizer that doesn’t use synthetic fragrances or dyes.
  4. SPF: It's really important to keep sensitive skin protected from the sun, so don't forget to find products with SPF, or use a gentle sunblock for the face in the mornings.

Cel Pro Tip: With all skin types, it's important to remember that the products we use on our faces, may not be the optimum product for our neck or chest area. The skin on our neck is thinner and more delicate than our face and sits further away from any muscle. This causes it to age more prematurely than other, plumper skin, and it needs a specialist, targeted cream or lotion to tighten and firm the dermal layers.
