The Truth About Dermal Fillers

A popular choice for those who want plump and youthful skin, but are they safe? And is it worth going under the needle?

Dermal fillers are one of the latest crazes in the beauty industry, and they’re designed to lessen the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging. But if you’re wondering how they work, and whether we believe it’s worth it, then keep reading...

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are small injections of gel, normally made up of hyaluronic acid, that claim to fill your wrinkles and add volume to any soft tissue. You can have them in different places on your face, such as your under-eyes, cheeks, mouth and jawline, as well as in your lips to make them bigger.

How do they work?

They essentially work by temporarily restoring lost volume in your face, to smooth out the lines. As we grow older (it’s been argued to start as young as 25) our bodies slowly stop producing collagen, the protein which keeps our skin plump and looking young. So by adding this volume synthetically, you can fill out any wrinkles that have already developed and keep the skin plump and smooth.

Do they hurt?

There’s slight discomfort when injecting the filler, but it’s often minimized by applying an anesthetic cream before the treatment. Afterward, it's normal to experience bruising, swelling and soreness, but this will reduce as it starts to heal.

What’s the difference between dermal filler and botox?

Botox essentially stops the small muscles in your face from making any movements that cause wrinkles, sort of like freezing your face in time. Whilst dermal fillers plump the skin with a gel from below the wrinkle to smooth them from the inside out.

Is it worth it?

Dermal fillers aren’t for everybody, and can sometimes be more hassle and pain than they're worth. If you’re hesitant to go under the needle then you have to also take into account that they have to be re-done every 18 months or so... they're not a permanent fix!

Alternatives

Dermal fillers are quite an extreme option if you’re looking for a good anti-ager, and it’s sometimes best to go down a more natural root, to encourage your skin to produce its own collagen rather than forcefully injecting it into your skin.

By utilizing the rejuvenation properties of Plant Stem Cells, you can recreate the same benefits of dermal fillers by encouraging your skin to produce more collagen and elastin on its own. Encouraging your skin to produce more collagen will reverse the signs of aging, and give your skin youthful smoothness. It is also a better long-term option, rather than continuing to have dermal fillers.
