The Pros & Cons of Dermarolling

Dermarolling or Microneedling Pros & Cons

Dermarolling, also known as Microneedling, has been a much talked about beauty trend in recent months.

Hailed as a cosmetic breakthrough by some, but shunned as a painful procedure by others, what are the real benefits or dermarolling, and is it for you?

What Is Dermarolling? Can Dermarolling Banish Skin Woes?

Dermarolling is a popular technique used in cosmetic skin treatments. It is a tiny cylindrical drum, studded with micro-needles which can be rolled across the skin’s surface, and claims to banish imperfections by rebuilding collagen fibres beneath your skin.

It’s said to work by puncturing miniscule holes into the skin, stimulating the repair process and cell regeneration. When the skin is damaged or wounded, it heals itself by creating new collagen which in turn leads to brighter, better looking skin.

It boasts itself as a treatment that works on banishing acne, scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and discoloration.

Dermarolling Pros & Cons: The Pros

Used in the right way, for the right reasons, a dermaroller can have a visible positive affect on your skin and support you in banishing your skin woes. Here are how it can help certain skin issues:

Wrinkles – By encouraging the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, dermarolling can naturally fill in wrinkles after around 3-5 uses.

Scars – Collagen production and stimulating cell regeneration can help repair scars and damaged skin by replacing the scar tissue with new, fresh skin cells.

Sun Damage – The small needle pricks stimulate blood flow to the skin’s surface, which can rejuvenate and repair sun-damaged skin. Dermarolling also speeds up the recovery process of sunburn, by absorbing any topical treatments quicker.

Stretch Marks – Although it can’t produce dramatic results, by encouraging the production of collagen in the skin, the prominence of stretch marks can be greatly reduced. Read up on some amazing ways to reduce stretch marks here.

Dermarolling is also beneficial because:

  • It's considered a quick and easy treatment, which has shown results after just a few sessions.
  • It isn’t painful! Although it may sound like it would hurt, dermarolling is actually pain-free due to the miniscule size of the needles.
  • There are few side effects. You will see a slight redness and inflammation for a short time immediately afterwards, but dermarolling recovery time is usually only 2 days.

Dermarolling Pros & Cons: The Cons

Like any cosmetic treatment, if it’s done incorrectly, there can be some side effects. Skin irritation and bleeding is the main con when it comes to microneedling, and doing it too much without allowing time for your skin to recover in between can also have adverse effects.

Another down-side to dermarolling is the possiblitly of infection. Ultimately, you are piercing tiny holes in your skin, leaving it open and vulnerable to infection. If you share rollers, don’t clean your roller properly, or expose your skin to dirt and germs too soon after treatment, there is of course the possibility of infection. Make sure you protect your skin and undergo treatment in a clean, sterile environment to reduce the risks!
