5 Weird But Effective Ways To Detox During The Festive Period

Looking after your health and skin throughout the holiday season is just as important as any time, if not more. What with Christmas parties and late nights (not to mention the stress of it all) our skin can sometimes suffer. Although we’re safe from too much sun damage in the winter (unless you’ve taken a vacation to get away from the cold), there are still a lot of environmental toxins we need to protect our skin from. So to save your skin and prevent any premature aging, here are our top tips to help detoxify your skin this holiday season, and all year round.

1. Get Moving

Working out isn’t primarily just for keeping you physically fit, as well as keeping your mental health in check (endorphins, please!) - it can also help your skin! When you sweat, your pores open up and are able to unclog themselves of all the dirt and oils they’ve collected that day! If you’re not up for an intense work out, but really want to get your sweat on, head to a sauna at least once a week (but remember to stay hydrated to replace all that water you're losing!).

2. Tea, tea, and more tea...

Green tea (and other herbal teas) are full of antioxidants, and have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe any irritated skin from the inside out. Some teas can even reduce the levels of cortisol in your body, also known as the stress hormone. Stress can have a massive impact on our skin, causing acne or even eczema. Green Tea and Chamomile Tea are your go-to when it comes to inflamed skin. Drink daily and see what a difference it makes!

3. But first, protect!

The pollutants and free-radicals we come into contact with every day can seep deep into our pores, causing inflammation and irritation. Pollution can even slowly deplete the amount of collagen and elasticity in your skin over time. Use an anti-aging eye serum for the most delicate skin on your face. This will help protect it from further damage, preventing the skin from sagging and leaving you with a youthful glow.

4. Food matters.

You really are what you eat, because what you consume will show on your face! Over the festive period, limit the amount of processed and sugar-filled foods (this is easier said than done!) Sugar intake cause the levels of insulin in your body to increase, resulting in inflammation. Other foods to avoid: artificial trans-fats, refined carbohydrates, seeds and vegetable oils, processed meat and alcohol. Cutting down on these food groups can make a massive difference to your skin, and it’s important to remember as this is the season of over-indulgence! Try not to get carried away and focus on immune-boosting fruits and vegetables and lean proteins.

5. Take a bit of time out

One of the biggest reasons our skin suffers in the winter is down to the cold, harsh weather. To truly rehydrate and nourish your skin, grab yourself a face mask and schedule some time out.

Final Thoughts

Remember, amongst all of the festivities, our skin can often suffer. If you find you come out the other end of winter with troublesome skin, try our tips and see how much better you feel! But most importantly, enjoy!
