How To Care For Your Post-Summer Skin

It’s that time of the year when the nights are getting longer, Fall is on its way and your skin is beginning to recover from all that sun exposure. Sound familiar? Symptoms include dull, dry and weathered skin that looks anything but radiant. But we’re here to help you out! Because when sun exposure causes freckles, sun spots, and overall discoloration, everyone needs some skin SOS now the autumn months are rolling in.

1. Update your skincare

We recommend starting to use retinol alongside a glycolic acid at night to help really reduce some of the post-sun skin woes.

Glycolic acids will work to exfoliate some of the dead skin cells, as the layer of them will thicken over the warmer months.

Retinols work to stimulate the production of collagen, the protein which is one of the main building blocks for your skin. The more collagen your skin produces, the plumper and more youthful it appears.

The best way to use both of these products is by alternating them, then you won’t experience irritation. Always finish with a heavy moisturizer as the skin can struggle to hold on to moisture after the summer, so use more than you usually would.

2. Stem Cells

Another way to encourage your skin to produce more collagen is to use stem cells in your skincare, that way the natural plant extract will encourage your skin to renew itself quicker and reverse the damage that occurred over the summer. An area that is particularly affected throughout the summer is your delicate eye area. Without enough sunscreen and without the protection from sunglasses with a UV filter, your eyes can really suffer from premature aging due to sun exposure.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant that has some amazing effects for both your body and your skin. It works to boost collagen, treat sun exposure photo-damage, smooth out skin tone and boost skin’s radiance.

As an antioxidant, it also helps protect the skin from free radical damage, including UV rays. Obviously, it won’t work as well as sunscreen does, but it will help prevent sun damage throughout the autumn and winter months because the worst thing you can do after a summer of sun exposure, is to expose yourself to more damaging UV rays.

4. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

The sun exposure really dries out your skin, so one of the most important things you can do is to rehydrate your skin. We recommend a weekly hydrating, targeted face mask.

Final Thoughts

The most important things to remember throughout summer and after is to wear sunscreen, apply eye serum every night and stay hydrated throughout. That way you can avoid any sun damage, or reverse it if it's too late. Even though often the sun can leave our skin feeling better when the sun is shining, the build-up of dead skin cells that are left will leave your skin feeling so much worse than it did at the beginning of summer. Protect and hydrate your skin, and your complexion will be brighter, more even and you can avoid premature aging!
